The Diagram

01

Perception

Every space is first felt — through sight, sound, scent, touch and presence.

02

Element

Earth, water, air and fire are not symbols. They are the medium of architecture.

03

Experience

Where senses meet elements, place becomes meaning — and meaning becomes value.

Philosophy

Six elements.
One sequence.

01

Earth

We begin with the ground, and ask what it already knows.

Topography, soil, orientation, native planting. The land sets the plan; we follow it rather than flatten it.

02

Water

Water is the oldest form of hospitality.

Bathing, sound, humidity, stillness. Water paces a building. Where you slow, where you submerge, where you are quiet.

03

Air

A room should breathe before it is beautiful.

Cross ventilation, shade, temperature gradients, scent. Air is the invisible material that decides how a place feels.

04

Light

Light is the only ornament we allow.

Apertures tuned to the season and the hour. Morning light to wake with, low western light to end the day inside.

05

Material

Materials should age in public.

Lime plaster, travertine, charred cedar, undyed linen. Chosen for touch and for how honestly they weather.

06

Movement

Wellness is choreography, not equipment.

The distance between rest and water, the depth of a threshold, the reason to walk outside at dusk.
